September is a great time to visit the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida. The US National Fish & Wildlife Service is responsible for running the J.N “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. “Ding” as it is known to the locals is a great tourist destination which had not been mapped by Google Street View. With our Trekker backpack and some 4 wheeled transportation provided by the USFWS we were able to successfully map this national treasure for everyone to enjoy on Google Street View. We also took the 360 camera inside the visitor center to round out the virtual tour experience (check out those bathrooms!).
Project Scope: The refuge consists of several trails and locations. Our goal was to create 360 images and successfully blue line the following attractions:
- Wildlife Drive
- The Indigo Trail
- The Wildlife Education Boardwalk
- The Bailey Tract
- Tarpon Bay Explorers
In addition we also needed to capture several panoramic images inside the visitor center and bathrooms.

Sanibel Seashell Industries is one of the oldest purveyors of seashells and shell related merchandise on Sanibel Island. Their retail store is extended with an online presence at seashells.com and they needed to update Google Maps with immersive 360 images of the retail shopping experience. After a day of staging panoramic photos in both of their buildings we submitted them to Google and repositioned each of the interior photos accurately. Here are the results of that effort (indicated by blue dots on the map):
Here is a live look at a few of the images:
Wilmington Brew Works recently opened with a dramatically improved exterior that was not reflected in Google Maps. Here is a picture of the dated Street View image on Google Street View:
We set out to update this image with a new “Blue Line” that reflected the dramatic improvements made to the exterior of the property.
Here is the newly updated image on Google Street View:
After completing the exterior updates we took the drone up for some 360 aerial shots:
Finally, we brought the 360 camera inside for some panoramas of the fantastic new interior:
